Upper Back Lift

Upper Back Lift

The Bra-Line Back Lift is a plastic surgery procedure that corrects loose, sagging skin or fat rolls on the upper and middle back, a condition often referred to as bra fat.

The procedure is termed as such since the treatment addresses sagging skin on the upper back surrounding a woman’s bra-line.

While putting on weight, or undergoing drastic weight loss from bariatric surgery, can affect the level of fat on your upper and middle back, aging is also correlated with this problem.

The excess lax soft- tissue or fat rolls in these areas are stubborn and challenging to rectify even with proper diet and exercise.

  • Who Is a Good Candidate for a Bra-Line Back Lift?

Generally, anyone who suffers from sagging back fat in the bra-line area qualifies as a candidate for the plastic surgery procedure.

The only advantage women have over men is that their bra can be used to hide the surgical scar.

Therefore, a Bra-Line Back Lift is an ideal remedy for this issue as it:

    • Eliminates fat rolls and bulges in the bra-line area
    • Rejuvenates lax upper and middle back tissue
    • Produces a smoother, more attractive contour
  • How you prepare for Upper back Lift Surgery?

During your first visit, your plastic surgeon will likely:

    • Review your medical history. About current and past medical conditions. Talk about any medications you're taking or have taken recently.
    • Do a physical exam. To determine your treatment options, we will examine the undersides of your upper arms. Photos of your arms will be taken for your medical record.
    • Discuss your expectations. Explain why you want arm lift and what you're hoping for in terms of appearance after the procedure. Make sure you understand the benefits and risks, including scarring.
    • Stop Smoking. If you smoke, you have to stop smoking for at least 2 weeks before surgery and during recovery.
    • Avoid certain medications. Like aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements, which can increase bleeding.
  • Bra-Line Back Lift Surgery

General anesthesia will be administered for the procedure.

The incision will be made in the identified area of the back, hidden in the bra line

From this incision, excess skin will be removed.

Your skin will then be stretched to eliminate wrinkles and folds, then reattached at the incision point.

During the procedure, liposuction may be performed as well to address underlying fat.

When ready, the skin is sewn together based on vertical line markings to ensure the skin position below and above the incision remains approximately the same.

After the incision is closed, bandage or tape is applied over the line.

While the surgical process varies for each patient, the Bra Back Lift Surgery should take around 2 hours.

  • Recovering from a Bra-Line Back Lift

Bra-line back lift surgery is an outpatient procedure.

After a brief onsite recovery period, we will send you home under the care of a family member or trusted friend.

Dr. Lynam will prescribe you medication to help manage pain or discomfort as you heal.

The recovery time for a back lift is approximately 7 to 10 days. During this time, you may feel more fatigued than usual, so make sure you listen to your body and rest when you need to.

While you recover, you will need to refrain from strenuous activity and exercise that could cause setbacks in your healing process.

In addition, wearing a bra or any type of support is not permitted. After the two-week period, we suggest wearing a loose-fitting, breathable bra for up to a month.

Do not shower or bathe for at least one day after surgery.

You will experience bruising, swelling and tenderness around the incision site, all of which will subside as you heal. You can use ice packs to help minimize the swelling.

  • The Recovery

After the surgery, the upper back is supported with a garment.

When this procedure is done alone, this can be performed in a outpatient setting.

If combined with other body contouring procedures, better to spend your first night in the hospital.

This insures that you can get intravenous pain medication and fluids to optimize the first 24 hours after surgery.

There are typically no sutures to remove, as there are multiple layers of self-absorbing sutures below the skin.  Small outside suture tails are usually trimmed within seven to ten days.

The recovery time for a back lift is approximately 7 to 10 days.

During this time, you may feel more fatigued than usual, so make sure you listen to your body and rest when you need to.

Once home, it is important that you get up and move around several times a day as recommended by your surgeon to help speed the recovery process and reduce the risk of blood clots forming in the legs.

A clot preventing medication may also be prescribed in the postoperative period.

Plan your initial recovery so that there is a friend or family member who’s with you at home for at least the first three to five days.

You will need help with the basics.

Each patient will recover in various ways and in varying lengths of time, though most patients find that they can go back to work within two to four weeks after surgery.

It’s important that you plan well so that you give your body time to heal in the best manner possible.

Strenuous activity and heavy lifting will need to be avoided for about two months. It can take a few months for all of the swelling to clear up and the scars will fade over time.

  • Can a Bra-Line Back Lift be combined with other procedures such as a Brazilian Butt Lift or Tummy Tuck?

Yes, a Bra-Line Back Lift can be combined with a Brazilian Butt Lift or a Tummy Tuck.

In general, procedures can be combined depending on the health and age of the patient, as well as the procedures in question.

  • What procedures does an Upper Body Lift include?

An Upper Body Lift can refer to a combination of procedures including a Breast Lift, Back Lift and Brachioplasty, also known as an Arm Lift.

  • How do I know I need a Back Lift and not Liposuction?

The Bra-Line Back Lift procedure corrects fat rolls and bra bulge through the removal of lax excess fat and skin, whereas Liposuction is used to suck out the fat that lies underneath the skin and there is no need for skin removal since the affected area does not suffer from loss of skin elasticity.

  • Is there a visible Back Lift scar?

While your scars should heal and fade with time, some scarring may be permanent.

However, the incision for a Back-Lift procedure is made in the area of the bra-line so that it is not visible while wearing a bra or breast support garment.

  • How soon after the operation can I expect to see final results?

Final results are unique to each patient, but typically you should see final results within six months to a year.

  • Is there any alternative to a Bra-Line Back Lift?

Unfortunately, when there is hanging, excess skin there is no alternative, but to surgically remove the excess skin.
