Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is a life-changing procedure and has one of the highest satisfaction rates of any procedure.

It is a procedure that removes excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue from the breast.

The areola skin, the dark skin around the nipple, can also be reduced in women who have large areolas.

Patients that often seek this procedure have problems with indentations in the shoulders left from bras, inability to work out due to discomfort, self-esteem problems, poor posture leading to neck and back pain, infections beneath the breasts and difficulty finding clothes that fit.

Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, not only reduces the size of the breasts, but makes them firmer, lighter and more proportioned to the rest of the body as well.

The procedure not only helps improve your appearance, but can also improve how you feel as well.

  • Am I a Good Candidate for a Breast Reduction?

For women with large, heavy breasts, breast reduction surgery is a safe and effective way to reduce the size of their breasts.

The surgery will help enhance their body image, and eliminate the physical pain and discomfort, bra strap indentations, skin irritation and poor posture.

Candidates for breast reduction surgery include women who:

    1. Breasts that are too large in proportion to your body frame
    2. Heavy, pendulous breasts with nipples and areolas that point downward
    3. One breast is much larger than the other
    4. Back, neck or shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts
    5. Skin irritation beneath your breasts
    6. Indentations in your shoulders from tight bra straps
    7. Restriction of physical activity due to the size and weight of your breasts
    8. Dissatisfaction or self-consciousness about the largeness of your breasts

The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for breast reduction surgery is to have a consultation with Dr. Ahmed.

  • What Can I Expect from A Breast Reduction?
    1. Better body proportion, posture, and breast shape.
    2. Regained confidence and comfort in one’s appearance.
    3. Reduced pain in the neck, back, and shoulder areas (not guaranteed).
  • How the Surgery is Performed

The breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

Dr. Ahmed will evaluate your specific situation to see what surgical technique is best suited for you.

Dr. Ahmed uses the new, “vertical breast reduction” technique.

This technique provides many benefits over the traditional approach, including:

    1. Minimal scar technique
    2. Better breast shape
    3. Lower risk of abnormal sensation to the nipple
    4. Lower risk of blood supply problems to the nipple
    5. Lower risk of bottoming out
    6. Significantly decreased blood loss during surgery
    7. No need for drains in more than 95% of patients
    8. No need for overnight hospital stay

All excess skin, tissue and fat are removed.

If the breasts are extremely large and pendulous, the nipple is repositioned for the best cosmetic appearance.

The incisions are placed together to reshape the new, smaller breast.

Sutures are placed in layers, deep within the tissue, in order to support the newly shaped breasts. Finally, bandages will be placed over the incisions.

The procedure will take 2-3 hours, depending on how big is the breast.

Following your surgery, you will be able to leave the hospital as soon as you are fully awake, which can take about 1-2 hrs after the surgery.

You will see Dr. Ahmed the following week at the clinic for a reassessment.

  • Can I breastfeed after reduction surgery?

A study published in 2007 looked at the ability of women to breastfeed after a breast reduction procedure.

They compared different types of breast reduction surgery and found that there was no difference in the outcome, nor was ability to breast feed different from other women with large breasts who did not have a breast reduction surgery

  • How long before I can return to my normal activities?

Most patients return to work within 1-2 weeks after breast reduction surgery.

You should avoid bending over, and avoid lifting anything above 5 pounds for several weeks.

You can resume your regular activities in about 4-6 weeks

  • Is the surgery painful?

Surprisingly, breast reduction surgery is not that painful.

The pain and discomfort is managed by the pain medication prescribed by Dr. Ahmed, but most patients use over the counter pain medication after the first several days.

Sleeping in an upright position with pillows for the first week or so will help with the pain.
